Heavy rainfall in southern Germany has caused severe flooding, leading to traffic controls that have virtually halted road and rail freight transport in the country, according to reports.
Industry sources say rail traffic to southern Germany has been significantly reduced due to the heavy rain, with services to and from Munich being the hardest hit.
The water level of the Danube River, which normally stands at 3 meters, has already exceeded 6 meters. Deutsche Bahn, the railway operator, has announced that Munich is currently inaccessible by long-distance trains departing from Stuttgart, Würzburg, and Nuremberg.

The flooding has caused train cancellations, road closures, and train stoppages, affecting truck and rail operations, which are crucial for import and export transportation. This is expected to have a ripple effect on container transportation by liner carriers.
The problems don’t stop there. Barge operations using canals are also expected to be hit hard. Local media reports that most canal barge operations using the Rhine River are at risk of being suspended within days due to high water levels.
