Welcome to TRADLINX, where logistics work becomes easier.

A significant incident occurred at a Turkish port where a large vessel caused the collapse of cranes. It appears that the port operations will be unfeasible for some time, necessitating continuous monitoring.

The incident happened on the 16th. The 14,100 TEU class vessel YM Witness, belonging to Yang Ming, collided with cranes while entering the Evyap Port in Kocaeli Province, Turkey. The initial collision with one crane led to a domino effect, toppling other cranes in the process. Out of a total of four cranes, three were damaged.

Turkish authorities have reported no casualties from the accident. However, local media reports suggest that one crane operator sustained serious injuries, and several containers fell from the ship to the port. Some officials estimate the damage from the accident to be at least $50 million.

The involved vessel services the Asia-Mediterranean ‘MD3’ route as part of the THE Alliance, which includes Yang Ming.

‘MD3’ route details:

Pusan – Ningbo – Shanghai – South PRC – Singapore – Jeddah – (Suez) – Ashdod – Istanbul – Izmit – Aliaga – Mersin – Ashdod – (Suez) – Jeddah – Singapore – Kaohsiung – Pusan

As of the 19th, TRADLINX’s cargo tracking solution Ocean Visibility confirms the vessel is still moored at the accident-stricken Evyap Port.

With the Evyap Port effectively paralyzed, there’s an expected impact on maritime transport and the supply chain. Vessels using Evyap Port as their point of loading or discharge will be directly affected. Additionally, changes to operational routes by shipping companies are likely, and the switch to alternate ports could lead to increased congestion. Continuous monitoring will be necessary until the situation is resolved.

TRADLINX will keep you updated on the Turkish crane collision incident through this post.
